Magical Lyrical Radiant Strike / Introduction
Last post by Senkusha - 17-May-2025 (Sat) @ 21:03:29
Magical Lyrical Radiant Strike is a magical girl role playing game set in the universe of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, set sometime between the second and third seasons (A's and StrikerS) of the anime.  You will be creating an original character, complete with your own unique barrier jacket, Intelligent Magical Device, customized spells (with defined elemental realm and color), and of course your familiar.

Your character(s) may have interactions with the canon crew, however, initially the main cast will be showcased in a limited manor.  This game is expected to completely bend and warp and twist the rules of magic and combat.  I'm hoping to find a game system that's flexible and light enough with regards to the combat mechanics to run successfully on a forum, yet is awesome enough to completely create our own spells, magical powers, and devices.

As of right now, I'm thinking of the following game systems, and this will most likely change as the week progresses:
  • Big Eyes Small Mouth 3e or 4e... possibly 2e Retro
  • Battle Century G Remastered
  • Princess Wing
  • Others?

The rating of this game will be 3/1/2 (pending)
I'm hoping for lots of action, maybe some romance, friendships, all that girly stuff, and definitely comedy.  And because Nanoha can be dark at times, that's why the excessive language and violence ratings.  Your characters may be as young as nine and as old as 25 (this follows the typical age range within the anime), just keep in mind that the older your character, the higher probability that you'll be doing desk work increases. :nosweat:

What defines a Lyrical Radiant?
  • Your character. (TBD points) - This is you1
  • Your familiar (TBD points) - An animal that has the capability to morph into a hybrid-humanoid.
  • Your Intelligent Magical Device (TBD points) - a magical computer that allows you to cast magical spells to affect the world around you.
  • Your Barrier Jacket (TBD points) - a special form of mage armor that protects you while you're transformed.
  • Your spell list (TBD points) - The specific spells you are able to cast.

Your character:  You are an ordinary human being.  Probably from Earth, living a mundane, normal life.  Nanoha, began her adventure as an ordinary third grader.  One day in class, she was prompted by her teacher about what she wants to do for a job when she grows up.  The entire first season of the anime can be summarized as her discovering what she wants to do for a career -- be a mage for the Time and Space Administration Bureau.  This is your adventure to discover what magic can do for you (or to you!)  Therefore, each Mage has two forms, a normal form, and a magical form.  You may only access your magic while transformed into Mage form.  There is a specific set of criteria that you need to fulfill in order to transform.  After being granted user access to your Intelligent Magical Device, you say the command "Set Up."  The first time you go into battle, you may take great liberty to describe your transformation looks.  For reference, it takes Nanoha over a minute and a half to transform the first time, -- and this was in animation form!  We only have words.  As Game Master, I fully anticipate to visualize your transformation sequence.  So be ready to dedicate some time to write something well worth my time!

Along with your character, you'll want to choose a magic specialty.  You'll have the ability to learn just about any spell, and you'll create specific spells with typical effects down below (under Spell Lists).  Within the setting of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, there are several predesignated roles, and you'll be choosing one.  You are not necessarily locked into this designation, so keep that in mind.  Here are the established roles from the anime:
  • Front Attacker -
  • Shooting Attacker -
  • Bombardment Mage -
  • Close Combat Mage -
  • Support Mage -
  • Summoner -
  • Armed Mage -
  • Area Search Mage -
  • Barrier Mage -
  • Hybrid / All-Rounder -

There are also two different ranking systems in the setting of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha.  One of which is a military ranking, because many mages have joined under the jurisdiction of the Time and Space Administration Bureau.  The other system or ranking is purely based on magical strength.

Your familiar:  You will have an animal meet you (of your own design and choosing) to guide you through your magical training and to be your battle companion.  He/She/They will have their own set of spells that they can use, although, a familiar is never more powerful than a mage is.  Most of the time, your familiar may be in its animal form, as this conserves Mana (energy).  You will be able to communicate with your familiar via telepathy, and vice versa.  Keep this in mind, that it's currently undetermined if you have private thoughts, in fact, it could be argued that as your bond grows with your familiar that you have less mental privacy.

Your Intelligent Magical Device:  You will be given (build) your own customized mage weapon.  This device is smart, like a computer, it's debatable whether or not these things have emotional capabilities.  These units are also capable of using telepathy with you (its Master/User).  You may only have access to your magical powers while in possession of your IMD, and you must have physical contact with it (although there is probably a Recall spell in existence-- that's up to us to determine!)  It should be noted that your IMD does not dictate what realm of magic you have access to, only that it grants access to use magic.  Finally, your IMD will have a name, be sure to remember it!

Your Barrier Jacket:  This is your mage armor.  You can design it any way you'd like.  Wanna wear the strongest armor in the known universe? (It could be a bikini!) Or maybe a frilly dress with gold trim?  How about a pair of blue jeans with a leather jacket?  All is okay.  You design the look you want for your character.  Just because we're playing in a magical girl genre doesn't mean that you have to wear a pretty dress, got it?  Anyway, this is a special set of clothes that replaces your normal street wear, and has added protection against magical attacks, bullets, bombs, nuclear explosions, and minor blade actions.

Your Spell List:  I haven't quite settled on how many spells we each know -- that might be determined by whatever game system that gets chosen.  However, there are certain spells that all mages seem to know.
  • Set Up - Activates your magical transformation, barrier jacket, intelligent magical device, allows access to all your other magical abilities.
  • Barrier - Defines a magical barrier, or creates a magical sub-dimension so that normal (non-magical) living beings can't get harmed.  Note, that inorganic things (buildings, streets, clothes, etc) are totally affected by magical phenomenon (and explosions too)!
  • Protection - Creates a protective magical barrier around you -- like a force field.
  • Round Shield - Creates a flat disk of about a meter (three feet) in diameter in front of your outstretched palm.
  • Recovery - A healing spell, specifically for your Intelligent Magical Device.
  • Bind - A set of magical handcuffs and shackles that prevents an opponent from moving.

Then there are special spells that mages can learn from one another.
  • Dimensional Teleportation - Allows you (or anybody within your Magic Circle to be teleported to a different dimension.

Finally, there's the spells that you know because they are contained within your realm.  For example, Fate Testarossa's realm is Lightning, so her spells revolve around lighting and thunder based attacks.  Nanoha Takamachi's realm is Divinity, so her spells revolve around the Cosmos.

(more to come as I define this game...)

Your Power Level:
In the anime, Nanoha begins fairly powerful, with the ability to case Divine Buster, and by the end of the first season (which is probably only a period of a few weeks), she can cast Starlight Breaker-- which apparently has the destructive force of a few nuclear bombs.  And remember, that while Nanoha was fighting Fate, she was only using Stun mode.  At any rate, these are the power levels I foresee us playing at.  With the ability to obliterate skyscrapers.

I've been attempting to expand the site, searching for new members to replace the ones that have migrated away onto other hobbies.  Lately, I've been reviewing various tactics for attracting new members, and one thing I keep running into is using outdated software makes people less likely to become involved with your site.  I've noticed a number of web forums that I visit use XenForo as their forum software of choice.  I like it as well.  It's clean, modern, and customizable.  But, it's also expensive!

$195 for the base license.  Plus the other miscellaneous additional fees for the expansions.  Literally nothing is free with that software, but it must be outstanding, because so many people are using it.  The problem I have is that I can't justify spending money on something that doesn't have a foreseeable payoff.  In this case, meaning if I take the plunge and buy XenForo, I'm out at least $250 for the year.  If I only get one active member, I'll consider it worth it,  however, if nothing changes, and I'm still basically shouting in to the Void.  Although, I'll have a pretty forum to look at.  I haven't even included the cost of the skins that would go into making the site unique!

Beyond just having a fresh new interface, we would gain one major advantage over the current SMF software, and that is multiple account access.  Or should I say sub-accounts.  This would be a wonderful add-on because we are a role playing website, and this way, people could post more in-character.  But, that add on is like $35 per year.  I suppose I could try to make my own version of that with what I've got, but if I don't have any other active members, should I even bother?

Negima! Magister Negi Magi / Languages and Communication

I'm nearly finished watching Negima!? another time through, and I just had an observation.

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

The students and staff of Mahora are presumably speaking in Japanese.  So now, all of a sudden an automatic subconscious language translation happens so everybody can understand everybody?

I'm sure this happens in other anime all the time, and it's something nobody really considers, after all, this is totally fiction, and writers are master creators of their own worlds.  It's just easier if everybody in a scene can communicate without too much effort.  I know that I struggled with this when I wrote the fan-fiction, Answering Fate.  But maybe I just was overthinking it?  (Speaking of... I really should try to republish that fiction online soon.)

Negima! Magister Negi Magi / Re: Failed at Makie failed at ...
Last post by Senkusha - 11-May-2025 (Sun) @ 17:26:10
Okay, I think I understand what's going on here.  This is a joke.  Makie is a very energetic and positive person.  The first time Ayaka belittles Makie for being "negative", Makie gets crushed, for failing to be "me".  Here's an entry from a wiki:

QuoteSince she shares the room with the Negi-crazy class president, Makie at times wears garments with her teacher's likeness on it. She reasons that Ayaka won't recognize her as a classmate if she refuses to wear them.[2] The blonde later consistently belittles her for her lack of drive, exclaiming that "she fails at being Makie Sasaki" and making her further depressed. Her depression is marked by turning herself white and holding her pose for an extended amount of time.

The Neverending Story [board] (1D) / Creating Characters
Last post by Senkusha - 10-May-2025 (Sat) @ 15:19:43
How do you usually create your characters?  I know there are books available that can assist with creating full-personality characters, but I've also thought, why not use a role playing game as a base.  That would give some interesting possibilities, especially for something within a science fiction or fantasy realm.  Are there any other options available? What do you use?

FUDGE / Descriptive Role Playing?
Last post by Senkusha - 08-May-2025 (Thu) @ 17:42:20
I'm fairly new to FUDGE, as somebody who's come from a more defined role playing background (meaning, using numerical statistics), have you found that playing with the descriptor words of Superb, Great, Good, Fair, Mediocre, Poor, Terrible to be easier to play or more difficult?  Also, do you stick with these words or do you create your own list of adjectives?

Negima! Magister Negi Magi / Student Housing

I was under the impression that all the students attending Mahora academy were assigned dorm rooms?

Although we know that Evangeline A.K. McDowell and Chachamaru Karakuri live in a private home on the other side of campus away from the other girls.  However, I can see this having been arranged specifically by the dean because
