I was diagnosed with scoliosis in 2002 and now I have to go into surgery in two years, one year, or a year in a half. I have been battleing scoliosis for a long while and now my body is (cough spine) has taken a turn in the worse. But if I do not go into surgery, I'm going to be in pain in my young adult years and it get worse each year.


But once I have the surgery, there will be some things I will not be able to do. Like, I might not be able to play sports.   I have all already tolded Senkusha, Faia ren, and EK know.

Bsek, I had Spinal Fusion surgery when I was 13 (I'm 29 now). I have 2 curves, one larger than the other. My large curve was 78 degrees when I went into surgery. I was diagnosed at 12, had surgery at 13. I wore a brace for a year, and it still progressed so quickly that the docs were worried. I found out years later that they told my mom that if I hadn't had the surgery I could be dead by the age of 33, heart & lungs crushed.

The surgery consisted of "untwisting" my spine, inserting 2 steel rods, making a bone plate from my hip bone fragments, clamping the rods to my spine, spreading the bone fragments over the rods. Over a year, the fragments fused together to form the plate (in case the rods ever have to some out, that will hold my spine.) I was in the hospital for a week.

The day after I came out of surgery, I was about an inch and a half taller and I had a curve of only about 27 degrees. (It was funny b/c overnight I was taller than my mom... Pretty cool for a 13yr old. lol) I spent the summer strengthening my muscles back up. My biggest mistake was in not remaining flexible.

You will be able to do much more than you think. Caution, yeah, but it's amazing what you can do. I don't know which surgery you're having... I'm not sure they do what I had, and I'm sure they have better stuff/techniques now. I may even have to go back, b/c I think my spine is still trying to twist. And that's scaring me to death.

The upshot of all this is... If you wanna talk I've been there & it wouldn't hurt for me to talk to someone who actually knows about it, too.

I have two curves in my spine too. The top curve is a 50 and the bottom curves is a 60.
